Where is the line between social media and marketing?

The question is a simple one:

Why are we doing this?

It deserves an answer. But more than that, it deserves a real answer. If we’re doing this to meet people, see things, and do stuff then I’m all in… That’s what I’m all about.

However, if we’re doing this as an alternative to paying for ads, then you can have it. Then we need to start cutting back on social.

I’ve been riding the social media wave for a year now, and I can’t help but notice the gradual disappearing act of the line between social media and marketing. For every one Quickbooks forum, there seems to be at least eight examples of what not to do…

So where is the line between social media and marketing? Does it still exist? Did it ever exist? Is there room for both in the future? What do you think?
