Just watched this Apple ad making fun of PC Innovations, and it got me thinking about the point behind innovation. My friend Rob May, creator of LifeStream Backup, says all the time that innovation needs to solve a problem. That if you’re innovating for the sake of innovation, and not solving problems, then you’re not doing much.
I agree with him.
I’ve seen enough over the past year to think that innovation needs to always start with a problem statement. Once you have a problem identified, you can commence with your innovative activities, but not until that point. That’s why I have a special place in my heart for infomercials…

I mean these are products that solve problems.
Seriously though, the problems of the world are crying out to be solved. Are you innovating to solve them? Are you making people’s lives easier, as the Apple ad points out?
