I have been reminded of the importance of baby steps this week.
As impatient as I am, most of the time, I find that it is the small victories that provide me with the encouragement I need to keep moving forward.
Like that single drive on the golf course that brings you back to the links after a horrible overall outing. There is something to the glimmer of an instant that speaks so loudly while showing so little.
I used to think that strategy was boring and slow. But I have found that strategy is necessary and fun, when I am not able to barrel my way through a problem. Second order moves and counter moves need to be thought about so that they can be acted upon when the time is right. I now realize how much time I have, and what an advantage time is…
It’s safe to say that I have learned more about being a project manager over the last year and change, then I have in my nine years of managing projects. The rub is my lack of slam dunk success stories to show for this monumental shift in knowledge I have accrued… that makes it easy to devalue.
Yet as I look back, I have been able to line things up in a way that was previously unimaginable to me. I am on the brink of something, and am excited to discover what that something turns out to be; even if it falls short of my hopes.
I’m in the game, and will be… as long as I keep taking baby steps.
