How To Network

Networking is a pretty big deal these days with the economy the way that it is, so I figured I’d share one huge tip on the right way to network with people in a down economy.

Be interested in them

It probably sounds cliche, but you have to ask yourself why someone should want to help you before you ask them for help. Are you only talking to them because you want something from them? Are you asking them for a favor when you just met them? Have you only thought about ways they can help you?

Because it just doesn’t work that way.

My Style

When I went to BlogWorld Expo I told myself a couple things:

A. I wanted to have fun
B. I wanted to meet cool people who I would want to hang out with
C. I didn’t want to be “that guy” who wanted things from the new people I met

I just wanted to meet them and I was successful on all counts. It’s that simple.

make it happen When networking, find out what the other person does for a living and let them know what you do, but try really hard to find common ground on a non-work related topic so that you can connect with the person as an individual. When it comes down to it, I have to like you if I’m ever going to want to help you.

I don’t think I’m alone here.

What Do You Think?

Are there more rules to networking than just one golden one? How do you like to network? Do you expect things immediately from new people you meet? Let me know in the comments below.

  • I think you hit on the silver bullet of successful networking, and, I confess, this is why I have such troubles with it. I wasn't always this way, I don't think. I used to be a social being.

I think I need to tattoo this post to the inside of my eyelids.
  • LOL Thanks Ed. I definitely have to remind myself as well, which is part of the reason i wrote about it. Things are so much more fun for me when I go into networking situations simply eager to meet people and connect on a non-work related subject. :)
