Maybe it’s my military background that coincides with the speculated origins of Kilroy that compels me to want to mark all of the places I’ve been in the world.
Who knows?
I do think that marking where you’ve been is great for two reasons:
1. You always remember where you came from and when it’s all said and done, memories are all we truly possess
2. I love looking into the future to find out where I want to go and knowing where I’ve been serves as a filter
Custom Google Maps
I’ve had a world map that I was always going to mount on cork board so that I could stick push pins in all the places where I’ve had some kind of significant experience. I just have never made the time to put it together. But Google Maps makes it easy. There is a My Maps link that you can click on and make maps for anything and share them. This is phenomenal.
What’s great is that you can get down to a level of granularity for the places you’ve been that were significant to you in some way, or you can just push a pin on a city. Google has a nice icon set for you to differentiate points of interest, plus you can add notes to your selections.
I’ve chosen to make my first map a tribute to the cork board map that never was… I’m putting it here to show you, but I thought it was also a cool item to put in the about section of this blog. You can learn something about somebody by knowing where they’ve been, eh?
What kinds of maps are you making?
